Born in the Sea raised by the mountains - Introducing Callum Thompson
by Fitzroy Surf Co.
Fitzroy has always had a side project which has been focusing on the mountains. Part of the reasons the brand was called Fitzroy was after the mountain in Patagonia. We were born in the sea and raised by the mountains. Creating products that are suitable for that environment is as challenging as climbing the mountains themselves. We aim to bring you some lifestyle ''North American Hike'' collections soon but to help us really push our developments and capture the story along the way we want to introduce you to our very first Mountain Ambassador - Callum Thompson.
Callum is a mad keen adventurer and is often out of reach as he is trekking the most beautiful, remote landscapes you have ever seen. Callum is a local north East UK sports enthusiast and it only felt natural to work with him with all his experience out on the hills...here is a little more about him...
Hey! I’m Cal, a freelance adventure photographer and content creator who has just joined forces with Fitzroy. I’ve been meaning to sit down and write this for a while now but people keep tempting me away with cool jobs!
I’m currently still recovering from spending Easter Weekend on the Isle of Skye, an action packed weekend with fellow photographers @Jack_Anstey, @theworldwithsarah & @DarylSWalker which left me with two ribs out of place from a fall in a tidal cave, crazy tired from 2 sleepless nights in the van (one night by a peacock farm and another with a punctured airbed!!) and a memory card full of insane content.
On Skye its easy to just shoot they “Hype” spots, places over saturated on Instagram such as the Old Man of Storr, Fairy Pools or Quiraing. I always try to avoid the crowds so on this trip we checked out some of the more difficult places to reach. Waterfalls by the Black Cuillins, Coastal headlands in the thickest fog ever, and the ill-fated tidal cave that almost broke me!
I’m from Seaton Sluice, I grew up on the family farm just outside the village, I guess my love of the outdoors stems from this.
What kit do you carry? - I managed to grab a new Fitzroy Recon back pack before they were launched. Super cool bits of kit, go check them out!!
When I’m hiking I carry way too much, my camera bag alone weighs in at over 16kg! I should probably look to scale that down a bit; my camera, 3 lenses and a drone could be classed as a bit excessive but I like to be prepared for anything.
If I’m spending the night out in the mountains I’ll also carry my 95L Duffle bag, filled with a tent, sleeping bag, roll mat, food, cooking equipment, water, extra layers of clothing, etc.
Really keen to get out with the new Fitzroy Urban Explorer rucksack, will be ideal as a day pack for provisions when I’m travelling light. Summer nights wild camping with just a bivvy bag will suit this perfectly!
Tell me about a normal weekend adventure
My weekend adventures tend to involve a long late night drive on the Friday, usually north into Scotland, a few hours sleep in the van and then up before sunrise too shoot in the best light. Back to the van for a coffee and breakfast before planning where I’m going to hike to during the day and where sunset will be good. Repeat the next day and then drive home…Best thing about my sleepless weekends away is that they feel like a fortnight, who needs sleep anyway? I have an office job during the week where I can go for a rest!
Whats been your favourite trip to date?
I’ve been to Slovenia twice now and can’t get enough of the place. The Julian Alps are just incredible, I’m hoping to head back there soon to conquer Mt. Triglav, a two day hike complete with via ferratas on some sick rock faces.
Lake Bled is also an Instagrammers dream, the perfect place to rest up ready for the next daft challenge.
Where is the next destination?
I’ll be heading back North to my second home at the end of May; the Isle of Skye. I’ve got a pretty sweet project on the go up there but its top secret for now so keep an eye out for more closer to the time!
First mountain Ambassador for Fitzroy - excited?
Just being labelled a ”Mountain Ambassador” made my day haha! It’s always great teaming up with cool brands, but to be working alongside such a great local brand is awesome! So stoked to represent Fitzroy on my travels!
Where kind we find more of your content/social media?
You can keep up to date with me on my Instagram @adventure_cal – I’m always looking out for new people/places to shoot so feel free to get in touch – I only bite occasionally!
