Pugsley was designed by our team rider Hannah Bristow. Now one of Fitzroy's best selling surfboards we want to share a bit more info on how the board was created.
Hannah had an idea of a board that she has been after for a few years but never been able to make that board a reality. Having the option to make this dream board we decided to open the doors of the workshop for Hannah to step inside and make this board herself.
The briefing...A board that should be taken into smaller conditions and still give a high performance lively and responsive feeling. Approachable for good - high level surfers or the surfer that wants to get to the next level approaching the waves more lively than your average joe.
Keeping it focused towards performance surfing we kept the outline of the Pugsley as you would find on a performance shortboard. Narrow rails with a bite point drawn forward to really allow the back end of the board to hold whilst pushed through a turn allowing the surfer to really hack into a turn. Putting a slight vee on the last 6 inches of the board allows release and gives it more response.
Hannah's approach to shaping was incredible. She wasn't sure how to get what she wanted but she knew exactly how she wanted it to feel. Working with passionate people makes it so much more fun and at the same time you build this pressure up as you want this dream board to be perfect just like they imagine it to be on the wave.
Once we had the shape pretty much dialled we returned to the sea watching Hannah surf on her every day boards. Looking at her style and positioning on the board we moved the fin boxes 1/2 an inch forward and pushed the width of the nose up to create a perfect blend of performance and fun in one board.
It had to appeal to the every day surfer as well as someone reaching comps and looking for that small wave performance option. We felt this combo was a great way of connecting the two areas of surfers.
Super easy to paddle onto waves, low volume and balanced well throughout. The Pugsley is a fantastic board to own and one that can be ridden in waist - head high conditions with confidence.
So lastly ...where did the name come from?
We have a list of names for boards we are slowly ticking our way through but it was only fair of us to hand this responsibility to Hannah as it was her very first signature model and she was our first team rider.
Pugsley....her travel companion was a pug soft toy given to her from her boyfriend. It went everywhere with her and still does to this day. It was quite a fitting explanation as this board is one you want to take everywhere too.
With the second board almost ready to be launched, designed by Hannah, we can't wait to open the doors more with the team and yourselves.
